Texas Instruments Demonstrates Eight Channels of H.264 Main Profile Encoding at D1 Resolution on a Single Processor

Developers benefit from lower cost per channel, system savings and simplified hardware design for NVRs, DVSs and DVRs.

Texas Instruments (TI) demonstrates eight channels of H.264 main profile encoding at D1 resolution (720 x 480 progressive at 30 frames per second (fps)) on a single processor solution. By offering this capability on a single processor, rather than current design solutions that require two or more processors, developers can reduce their bill of materials (BOM) costs. This will significantly lower the cost per D1 channel and developers can utilize a less complex hardware design to create smaller security system components such as digital video recorders (DVR) and digital video servers (DVS). This single processor offering also provides legacy codec support of MPEG-4 and JPEG encode and decode at the same density.

Developers can also combine this single processor with two of TI's new TVP5158 devices. The TVP5158 is a four-channel video decoder with flexible video outputs that removes the need for an external mux FPGA in applications requiring multiple channels, thus reducing system cost by several dollars. Additionally, a single processor solution requires less external memory and board space, providing further system savings. Developers can now benefit from these cost efficiencies and improved design flexibility for video surveillance applications such as network video recorders (NVR), DVSs, DVRs, hybrid DVRs and high-definition cameras for video conferencing.

Great Outdoor Shootout Takes Stock of Detectors

A&S partnered with Australian remote monitoring service provider VideoControlRoom to test outdoor detectors. Michael Brown, MD of VideoControlRoom, discussed how the solutions that aim to eliminate false alarms while reliably detecting intruders fared in real life.

As VideoControlRoom moves toward “bill per event” services, it is important to prove to customers that we understand and use “world’s best practice” outdoor detection. Therefore, we decided to partner with A&S, the only trade publication with the reputation and global reach to engage the manufacturing community, and share the results for the betterment of the industry. The invitation was open to all manufacturers, and the only entry criterion was a willingness to have their products openly tested against peers.

China's Security Market Grows Dramatically

In 2008, China's security equipment manufacturing market turned from the chaotic phase to the orderly phase, which was attributable to market competition and improvement of market order on the one hand, and to the efforts made by strong players at independent innovation and brand building on the other hand. At the same time, Olympic economy added fuel to China's intelligent building industry. At present, the security industry is evolving towards energy conservation, environmental friendliness, networking, intelligent technology, system and alliances. Enterprises are generally striving to grow in size and strength and roll out branded products.

Video monitoring remains a hot market segment. "All-in-one card" is very popular. The real estate market and community security give a notable impetus to sales of building intercom and alarm systems. With the rapid development of the integration of access control and other security systems, security products' application fields are extending.

In the face of competitions as well as market changes and challenges, the 2008-2009 Annual Report on China's Intelligent Building Market released by us will help enterprises, investors and industry insiders grasp more accurately laws governing the market's development and comb the development track of application value.

VIVOTEK Enhances Australia's Gallery Security

National Gallery of Australia (NGA), home to numerous exquisite and valuable artworks, is a thrilling work of art with subtle exterior and delicate interior design. Initially, a CCTV system was employed to protect gallery assets, but monitoring of the gigantic gallery remained difficult and inefficient. Because the interior of the gallery is frequently changed to accommodate a variety of exhibitions, the CCTV cameras must be redeployed every now and then. Due to cabling, the redeployment is time-consuming and labor-intensive, causing great pain to NGA. Due to the importance of maintaining the structural integrity of the building, NGA needs a solution that can fit in with the decor so as to achieve a balance of good visitor experience and maintain high security levels.

NGA wanted to replace the CCTV system with a flexible system that allows them to add or relocate cameras easily, and capable of providing high image quality for investigative purposes. The system should be able to blend into the interior design and the structure of the building. Zylotech, VIVOTEK's distributor in Australia helped NGA install VIVOTEK's network cameras.

To blend in with the decor, VIVOTEK SD6122s with their dome design were selected. The SD6122s' 10x zoom capability can provide close-up images of minute objects, allowing the operator to identify visitors with ease. Wrapped inside a vandal-proof housing, the SD6122s are firmly protected from burglars' damage.

Some of the SD6122s were added a weather-proof housing for installing outside the building, in the landscaped garden and the parking lots. The housings shield the cameras from rain and dust, enabling them to operate in extreme weather conditions. The SD6122s offer wide pan/tilt movement with continuous 720-degrees pan and 110-degrees tilt, making them suitable for monitoring wide open outdoor spaces.

The new installation solved the cabling problem of the CCTV system for NGA, significantly enhancing their system scalability. The manager can search, record or manage data in a more straightforward way and needs not worry about image quality degradation any more. Good image quality enables manager to make things out easily. Furthermore, the dome design of SD6122s perfectly matches the decor of the building, ensuring visitors best gallery experiences in maximum security.

"With this upgrade we have gone from the Stone Age to a state-of-the-art digital surveillance system and that's what this site should have given the value of what we're protecting.” said O'Sullivan, Manager for security at NGA.

Sony Professional Enhances Channel Support

Sony Professional reinforced its commitment to its reseller community through the expansion of its partner program. Sony believes that working more closely with its Independent Software Vendor (ISV) community will encourage innovation in the security market and the uptake of new products, enabling partners to grow their businesses more effectively.

To date the support scheme has encouraged greater uptake of new security solutions, such as the H.264 codec and Intelligent Video Analysis, which in turn has had a significant impact on the expansion of IP technology. Sony’s Security Solution Portal Site provides technical information including Software Development Kit (SDK), live demonstrations and promotional materials to help its partners’ trial and implement new Sony technology. For example, Sony pioneered the adoption of H.264 compression in the security industry through the release of the first H.264 compatible security cameras line-up in 2006. It now boasts a line-up of eight H.264 compatible cameras and a group of ISVs in Europe that support the codec, or plan to by May 2009. As Wolfgang Baumgartner, CEO, NETAVIS Software said, “NETAVIS system integrators have chosen to use Sony H.264 cameras not only because of quality they offer but because Sony supports H.264 in PTZ cameras.”

Sony is also helping ISVs to realize the full benefits of Intelligent Video Analysis technology. One of the first manufacturers to embed intelligent video analysis technology into its cameras, Sony’s real-time Distributed Enhanced Processing Architecture (DEPA) allows users to process content directly after image capture. Users also benefit from intelligent motion detection that helps to reduce false alarms, resulting in improved security and reduced costs. “Sony’s advanced security technology enables us to offer users autonomous, simple and powerful management of video analysis. Moreover, the standardization across the complete Sony range gives all Sony camera users access to the technology regardless of the size of their investment,” said José Savoye, CEO, VISEOX.

"We are also working with our ISVs to incorporate DEPA support into other video management software offerings on the market,” said Yu Kitamura, EMEA Product Manager, Video Security, Sony Professional. “Sony is committed to enabling new customers to benefit from product innovation in the security market. We continue to work closely with ISVs to encourage accessibility and adoption.”
